Un-Stuck Between the Snuggles and the Quiet

“Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time”

Slaughterhouse-Five

In Kurt Vonnegut’s novel, the protagonist doesn’t live his life in chronological order, but instead moves about in time to experience different parts of his life. When I read the novel in high school, I thought it was, in a word, weird. But when I was home with three kids under the age of five, I changed my mind. Being unstuck in time was a marvelous idea!

What I wouldn’t have given then to trade forward one noisy day of diapers and musical toys for one quiet day of empty-nester-ness. To trade the lunch of Happy Meals and Playplaces for a mature date night. I was sure my future self would likewise be thrilled to trade the quiet for a day of little hugs and snuggles.

Well, I’m no empty-nester yet, just somewhere between the snuggles and the quiet. And while I do still occasionally find myself wishing I could make that trade, I now imagine trading back in time.

Watching home movies is the next best thing to becoming unstuck in time. The clips of momentous events and everyday life certainly draws me back in. But something amazing happens when I pop in a DVD to watch with my not-so-little-ones. They kind of become… just a little bit… snuggly.

So, if you’re feeling stuck or missing your snuggles, give Multimedia Memories a call. We’ll bring your memories to life!

Habitat for Humanity Slideshow

Habitat for Humanity of Boone County, Indiana, in conjunction with Homes for Wounded Warriors, built a house for Marine Sergeant Jesse James and his wife. I prepared a slideshow from their pictures of the building progress, set to patriotic music (by military bands and in the public domain)

Storing Photos, Video, and Digital Files

The formats for family keepsakes is constantly changing. Slides gave way to prints, which gave way to digital picture files. Home movie film reels lost to video tape, which is now losing to digital video. DVDs, which are making VHS tapes obsolete, now have competition from blu-ray. Hard drive storage is becoming ever cheaper, and the latest trend is to store your precious files somewhere in “The Cloud.” But what is the one best way to keep media memories and archive digital files?

I’ll be honest with you. There isn’t one. And by that I mean, there isn’t ONE. The best media and file storage is not so much a place or a format as a strategy. And the best strategy for protecting and enjoying your media memories involves both convenience and redundancy.

First and foremost, your media should be converted and kept in a format that you can presently enjoy and share with ease. For example, a photo book on a coffee table for guests to enjoy is preferable to a box of photos still in their store pouches. Video tapes from a broken camcorder should be transferred to a format you can play back. Digital images should be easily accessible on your viewing screen of choice, whether that be your portable ipad or the family room TV.

In addition to the ability to enjoy your pictures and video at present, a storage strategy should be mindful of protecting them for the future. Even if they are fine now, analog video tape, film reels, slides, and prints, all risk color deterioration over time. Humidity, dust, and sunlight can quickly age these formats, sometimes making them unrecoverable. In contrast, digital files do not fade over time, but are instead at risk of being lost due to failure or corruption of the hard drive or memory card. And everything, physical or digital, is at risk of loss due to fire or weather. Therefore, maintaining redundant digital copies, in multiple locations, is the best overall strategy.

A plan for redundant digital copies need not be complicated, and you don’t have to do it alone. Multimedia Memories can help you plan a strategy for protecting and enjoying your photos and videos for years to come.

Having Fun with Special Touches

One of the things we enjoy most at Multimedia Memories is designing something unique and creative. While we have serious computing power and software at our disposal, they are just the tools. Or, if your like us, they’re more like toys.

Recently, we’ve designed a 3-D pop-up Christmas Card as a DVD menu. We’ve created motion slideshows with reflections, animated magazine page flips and pop-up photo books. We’ve made pictures of the cheerleading squad do backflips and cartwheels. And using a photograph of a basketball hoop, we’ve even animated the net stretching as the ball went through. Our designs can be understated and elegant when appropriate, or full-trottle, and of course, everything in between.

We could say more, but right now we’re busy working on animating flying text that lands on football field splattering “mud” on the camera.

Professional yet Personalized Organization for Digital Transfers

Ah, spring. It’s a time of year full of anticipation. Anxious to enjoy all the promises of lovely weather, we make a few preparations: spreading the mulch, tuning up the bike, and, for a lucky few, setting up the hammock.

It’s also a great time to dust off those old memories and convert them into shiny new DVDs. But don’t you want more than just transferring to digital format? DVDs and Blu-ray discs offer the promise of easy viewing through menus and scene selections. Raw footage can be edited to tell a story. And still pictures can come to life in motion slideshows. It’s digital equivalent of some beautiful landscaping.

But perhaps it seems a little overwhelming. A box of slides of who-knows-what, tapes you haven’t played in years, film reels of long forgotten events. Perhaps it seems an insurmountable task to get it all organized, ordered and cataloged.

Sure you want them to look great on DVD, but it shouldn’t be work, right?

Right!

That’s our philosophy here at Multimedia Memories. We specialize in not just transferring your media memories to DVD, but in organizing them and transforming them into something easy and fun to watch. With meaningful chapter markers and a navigable DVD menu, you can find a specific event, your favorite scene, and that season-winning game.

So, before you say, “I really need to take care of that” one more time, bring us that box of disorganized tapes, the hard drive full of files with cryptic names such as DSC00345, or any mystery memories. We’ll work our magic.*

It’s like “Spring Cleaning”, but without the work.

Custom Work

It’s what we do best, and why we’re different.

Our speciality is everything that transforms your photo and video into something new and special, as opposed to just a transfer to a different format.

We love creating a product that is special and unique for your treasured memories.

Our favorite service is a photo slideshow & video montage. This custom work does not follow a formula and, as a result, is as difficult to quantitatively measure as are your memories. While it involves a great deal of technology, it is art. It is created just for you, and, to our knowledge, is unlike anything our competition does.

But custom work isn’t just for a slideshow. We can transform video tapes, too. Whether it’s something as simple as scene-based chapter markers (you’ll want them) or cutting out the times you left the camcorder recording on the coffee table (trust, us, you did), or the ten minutes your kids recorded cartoons over your home movies (sure, blame the kids), we think you will want more than just a straight transfer to DVD.

That’s why we love what we do.

Archiving, Preservation & Storage, Oh My!

Welcome to the digital age, where digital still and video cameras have completely changed the way we capture memories. With no film costs, no developing fees, and no prints to buy, it’s easier than ever to click and record away.

In high definition and high resolution, we can snap every smile, capture every coo, and digitize to our delight.

And then…..

We fill up our hard drives with the many gigabytes of our precious memories.

We can take care to archive these treasures by renaming and sorting the digital files, and we might preserve and protect them with automatic backup services.

But then….

It’s still the digital age’s equivalent of a shoebox full of slides in the attic.

A carefully labeled shoebox, I grant you.

Because the real value in our pictures and videos is not in their mere existence, no matter how carefully kept. It is in the enjoyment we receive from viewing them — and most especially when our loved ones view them together.

That’s why I love what we do at Multimedia Memories. We make your memories as fun as they are easy to watch.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Don’t let your pictures remain silent. Call Multimedia Memories today!
